Breve descriptor:
En el curso se estudiarán las distintas evoluciones de la ficción en los Estados Unidos desde la década de los cincuenta del siglo XX, teniendo en cuenta la difícil sistematización del periodo, en parte por la cercanía crítica respecto de obras y movimientos, pero también por la variedad de la producción narrativa en las últimas décadas y su diversificación en cuanto a aspectos como cuestiones de clase, raza o género. Se dedicará especial atención a la relación entre la sociedad norteamericana contemporánea (y sus valores estéticos, simbólicos, culturales, políticos, y morales) y las producciones literarias, estudiadas así en su contexto histórico, social, político e ideológico, y también en el contexto crítico de lo que se ha dado en llamar "la edad de la teoría". Se estudiará cómo el predominio de la teoría en el contexto crítico y la potente industria editorial y las nuevas condiciones de publicación y lectura han podido afectar la creación y evaluación de obras de ficción.

The course studies the developments of U.S. fiction since the 1950s, taking into account the difficulties in systematizing the period covered, partly because of the closeness to the present time of the works and movements to be studied, but also because of the variety of narrative productions in the last decades, and the diversification in the portrayal of aspects such as class, ethnicity, and gender. The course will pay special attention to the connections between contemporary U.S. society (and its aesthetic, symbolic, cultural, political, and moral values) and literary productions, which will be studied both in their ideological, historical, social and political context, and also in the critical context of what has been called the age of theory. We will study how the predominance of theory in the critical context; the power of the publishing industry; and new settings of publication and reading, have all affected the creation and assessment of contemporary fiction.

- Presentar a los estudiantes la ficción más relevante (en forma de novelas, relatos y otras formas) de las últimas décadas en los Estados Unidos, fomentando el análisis crítico de las principales tendencias literarias y sus obras y autores más representativos.
- Introducir a los estudiantes en el debate crítico en torno al postmodernismo y sus producciones culturales, específicamente literarias.
- Ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar sus destrezas de interpretación y lectura crítica de obras literarias, fomentando su capacidad para analizar la literatura desde distintas perspectivas críticas.

- To present students with the most relevant fiction (in the shape of novels, short stories, and other) produced in the US in the last decades, fostering critical analysis of the main literary movements and the most representative works and authors.
- To introduce students to the critical debate on postmodernism and its cultural productions, specifically literary ones.
- To help students develop their skills in the interpretation and critical reading of literary works, and to foster their ability to analyze literature from a number of critical perspectives.

Para aproximarse al periodo propuesto, se tendrá siempre en cuenta que las categorías en que se dividen, tentativamente, las distintas producciones literarias de esta época no son nunca excluyentes, sino que se complementan y solapan con frecuencia. Aún así, se distinguirán una serie de grandes bloques temáticos que pueden ayudar a los estudiantes a familiarizarse con la variada y compleja producción de ficción en esta época:
0. Visión panorámica de la historia de los EE. UU. desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
1. Inconformismo y literatura en las décadas de los 50 y los 60: Los escritores beat (Posibles lecturas: Jack Kerouac, Joyce Johnson, William S. Burroughs).
2. El "resurgir" del relato (Posibles lecturas: Flannery O'Connor, Shirley Jackson, Donald Barthelme, Joyce Carol Oates).
3. La respuesta de minorías y mujeres: los años 70 y 80 (Posibles lecturas: Maxine Hong Kingston, Sandra Cisneros, Toni Morrison).

To approach the suggested period, we will take into account that the categories into which the different literary productions of this age are divided do not exclude, but rather complement each other, and they often overlap. A number of units will be suggested, so as to help students familiarize themselves with the diverse and complex fictional production of this age:
0. A Panorama of US History from World War II.
1. Nonconformity and literature in the 50s and 60s: The Beat writers as an exemplary case (Possible readings: Jack Kerouac, Joyce Johnson, William S. Burroughs).
2. The "resurgence" of the short story (Possible readings: Flannery O'Connor, Shirley Jackson, Donald Barthelme, Joyce Carol Oates).
